Peggy Reece, 72, of Hartsville, died following a long battle with cancer at 9:51 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017 at the Hartsville Pike home of her sister in Castalian Springs. She was under the care of High Point Hospice.

One of nine children of the late Wally J. “J. Bird” Burton and Modie B. Angel Burton, she was born Peggy Sue Burton in Carthage on Oct. 16, 1944.

A son, Scotty Dale Reece, preceded her in death as the result of an automobile accident on Halls Hill on May 6, 1992 at the age of 21; and a grandson, Justin Lynn Reece, who died at birth preceded her in death on March 10, 1989.

She was also preceded in death by two siblings, Diane Bishop, who died Jan. 8, 2017 at the age of 68 and by J. C. Burton.

On June 17, 1961, she was united in marriage to William Carl Reece Jr., who preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2012 at the age of 69, following over 51 years of marriage.

Mrs. Reece was a member of the Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors are: two sons, Ricky (Carol) Reece Sr., Steven Lynn Reece, both of Hartsville; four sisters, Debra Labee of Castalian Springs, Thelma Sadler of Gallatin, Yvonne Smith of Lebanon, Hazel Bayer of Atlanta; two brothers, Ronnie (Shelby) Burton of Gordonsville, Tony (Christine) Burton of Hartsville; four grandchildren, Helga (Matthew) Gammons, Christy Reece, Ricky Reece Jr., Carlton Reece; six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted on Thursday, Feb. 23 from the Dixon Springs Cemetery. Her former pastor, Eld. Eddie Gregory, officiated. Burial followed in the Reece family lot in the Beasley-Brooks section of Dixon Springs Cemetery.
