Friday’s straw giveaway is designed to allow pets to have a warm place to sleep during the winter.

On Friday, Nov. 23 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in Hartsville City Park, Dreamland will give out at least 40 bales worth of straw to Hartsville residents who have dogs or cats that are primarily outside animals. The giveaway will be held between the swimming pool and tennis courts in the park.

Using straw to make a bed for an outside pet helps keep the animal warm – something especially important with winter approaching.

“Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside,” said Dreamland owner Donna McGregor. “Longer-haired and thick-coated dog breeds, such as huskies and other dogs bred for colder climates, are more tolerant of cold weather; but no pet should be left outside for long periods of time in below-freezing weather.”

Dreamland will also accept donations of gently used blankets or doghouses on Friday to be used for pets.

Financial donations can be made to the facility’s account at the Hartsville Co-Op, which is providing the straw for the giveaway.
